Bringing Hippo Insurance to the Mason-Dixon

Hippo launches home and condo insurance in Maryland.

Hippo launches condo and homeowners insurance in Maryland.

Knowing “The Star Spangled Banner” was about to hit every radio station on July 4th, particularly across the state it was written, in Maryland – we pushed ourselves to expand our home and condo offering to the 6 million residents living on the Mason-Dixon Line before Independence Day. As one of the first states to ratify the Constitution and a stronghold in the Revolutionary War, Maryland’s patriotic roots gave us the inspiration we needed to battle it out internally. Although I lost this battle with the tech team, we are launching our tailored, simplified home insurance into this great state today – just a few days after families and friends across the US put their sparklers and flags away.

Driving an hour in any direction in Maryland, you might find yourself in a city, among the mountains, or on a beach. Perhaps most importantly, Maryland has some of the best seafood in America. That varied topography and coastal mid-Atlantic location does present unique risks for homeowners, though. Hot, humid summers coupled with severe, snowy winters make for extremely volatile weather. Maryland averages 43 inches of rain throughout the state each year, with peaks in July through September. Wind, floods, and hurricanes are the top reasons for homeowners insurance claims. The state also suffers about three tornadoes per year.

Recently, both Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene caused serious damage to homes – and savings accounts – in the Chesapeake Bay State. Even milder storms or an incidence of burst pipes can leave an expensive mess behind. Whether you’re based in bustling Baltimore or account for one of the 13 residents of Port Tobacco Village, protecting your home is important.

Surprisingly considering its propensity for natural disasters, the average annual insurance premium for HO-3 policies in Maryland is $1,165, just a tad lower than the national average of $1,200. Of course, that doesn’t make paying over $1,100 a year any better, especially if it doesn’t include the cost of an endorsement for water and service line backup, which the Maryland Department of Insurance requires insurance providers in the state offer. We offer that standard, so you won’t even have to think about it.

Our standard coverage for electronics is four times higher than policies from other providers in the state, meaning hardworking and tech-loving Marylanders won’t face astronomical fees when protecting their equipment. Customers can tailor policies to cover other specific items (like a grill or expensive artwork) so they have custom peace of mind.

Plus, with Hippo, homeowners can save up to 25% on their premiums. All that can go a long way toward blue crab cookouts, county fairs, Ravens tickets, or a vacation in Ocean City. Ultimately, our goal is to offer the coverage you need at a price that’s fair for everyone.

Please reach out if you live in Maryland and want to learn more about Hippo homeowners insurance. I’d love to introduce you to our fantastic team, who can provide a quote in 60 seconds and help explain the special protections we offer.
